Concept;

Twenty years ago, Doctor Amelia Wahnart made national and international headlines when she publicly accused her colleagues of “playing God” with immoral and dangerous experiments. She claimed her co-workers were looking into three main things;

1. What was it that made a person a “person”?

2. Was it possible to recreate that?

And

3. Once a person had died, could you reanimate that part of their brain and bring them back?
Doctor Wahnart expressed her concerns to their superiors but they went unheard and it became apparent that the viruses that were being worked on were ordered from the higher ups. She remained silent on the matter for the next 12 months, watching and gathering intel on the studies being done, the viruses being made and the planned methods of testing.

When they moved onto human testing -often on homeless people taken from the streets and tested on without consent- Dr. Wahnart decided she could no longer stay silent and she finally took her accusations public.
However, the company she worked for shut her claims down, accused her of falsifying information to sully their name and the defamation led to her being discredited and the destruction of her career.

Afterwards, Dr. Wahnart disappeared from the public eye, becoming reclusive. The only tell-tale sign that the scientist was still somewhere out there were the “safe houses” that kept popping up all over the country. Each of these buildings were built to the same specifications; several floors, each serving a different purpose and essentially providing a large, comfortable living space designed to resemble a mix between a hotel and an apartment building and were enclosed inside a large, strong fence.

Conspiracy theorists and supporters of Dr. Wahnart came to the conclusion that the reclusive scientist had designed and commissioned the construction of what would be zombie proof buildings, supported by her past claims that there would eventually be an outbreak if her former colleagues were allowed to continue to play with life.

And guess what?

One of these buildings is your new home!

Two years after the initial outbreak, you find yourself living in one of Dr. Wahnart’s zombie proof hotels. The stone and metal fence that circles the building stands at a solid 12 feet high and, unbeknownst to anyone who hasn’t seen the specs, stands in a 6-foot-deep well of concrete. There’s also sharp, metal spikes that add an extra foot of height along the top, designed to look decorative while making it near impossible for anyone without higher brain functions to climb.

The yard itself sports several vegetable gardens and fruit trees. There’s a gorgeous pond full of koi and plenty of seating areas. There’s also a pool and hot tub, for in case you really want to splurge! All the chemicals, tools, fertilisers and whatnot reside in the garden shed in the back corner. If you didn’t know what lurked beyond the compound, you’d think it was just another beautiful garden outside a fancy retirement village.

The ground floor of the building is rather empty. There are no windows except those within the entrance door and in the centre of the room is what appears to be another, smaller room with a reinforced, metal door with a square window that opens from the other side. This room contains a flight of stairs.

The second floor is where things start to liven up. The door at the top of the stairs -another reinforced metal door- opens into a well-lit, open plan living-dining-kitchen area. There are large windows that provide a view out into the city made from, you guessed it, reinforced, bullet proof glass. Safety and natural light, all rolled into one! And don’t stress, some of them even wind open so you can let in the fresh air! Those are identifiable by the screens in place to keep the bugs out!

The lounge itself features a large, cinema-size TV screen and several plush couches and armchairs. There’s two dining tables and the kitchen cupboards had been fully stocked with non-perishable items at the beginning of the end. There’s also a huge walk-in pantry containing plenty of other necessary items you may need.

There’s also two bathrooms on this floor so you don’t have to go upstairs every time you need to pee and a laundry room! Next to that, sits the elevator bay.
The building contains two fully-functioning elevators as well as a flight of stairs that will take you to each of the remaining floors. Imagine a nice hotel with rooms of varying sizes to accommodate anything from a single person to a small family, that all have bathrooms -some with baths, others only with showers- and small kitchenettes complete with mini-fridge and kettles for tea and coffee.

I bet you're wondering how all of this is powered when the world ended two years ago?
Well, solar and wind.

Yup, Dr. Wahnart thought of everything! The whole compound was designed with the idea in place of being fully sustainable even when off the grid as she suspected would be the case if the world ended in this manner. The roof, fully accessible, houses an obscene number of solar panels and several generators that power the building. Behind the building are wind turbines that connect into the same place, adding an extra source of power generation. And don’t forget the water tanks!

Oh, were you wondering how you could stock up on supplies when you started to get low? There are two trucks in the garage, that comes fully equipped with petrol bowsers and spare parts. Down the line, you may need to brave a gas station, but at least for a while, you were all set! If you were careful about your trips, there might still even be petrol left after all this time.

Oh and those supplies? They are going to start getting low and far quicker than anyone ever anticipated after two years of being in the zombie-filled wasteland. You’re going to need to start venturing beyond the fence and soon. Just remember above all else: don’t get bitten.
